Or are you just looking for a great after-school/ camp option for your kids? If any of these are true, look no further! South Bay Sailing has the ability to accommodate all your needs. We offer a vast array of adult lessons at South Bay Sailing, including four of the ASA Standards, which can be completed in as little as 8 Lessons. We also offer uniquely created courses that you won't find anywhere else. In addition to adult lessons, we also offer after-school, spring, and summer sailing camps for your children. The youth camps we offer are great options for your children, especially if they are looking for a fun, unforgettable experience.

South Bay Sailing: Adult Programs

Overview of Courses and Student Standards

The American Sailing Association has adopted two separate Progressive Sailing Certification Programs, one of which is a seven standard Keelboat Sailing Certification Program. We at South Bay Sailing offer four of those seven standards, as well as many custom courses. We also offer non-certification courses that break down two of ASA’s most popular standards (ASA 101 and ASA 103) to make learning them more manageable.

Overview of Student Options

Before Registering:

  • Determine the level of curriculum you require.
  • Choose a course listed below. We recommend you choice reflect your current experience/ ASA Certification level and/or your desired ASA Certification level.
  • Determine the level of schedule flexibility you require.
  • Choose one of the two scheduling options listed below. This should be based on your availability and/or your desired lesson frequency.
  • Register for the desired course and lesson schedule by calling (310) 937-3180 or sending us an email at instruction@southbaysailing.com. You may either reserve a spot for multiple lessons at once, or reserve spots over time as you progress.

Remember: Reservations are required and space is limited. All lesson credits must be used during the calendar year in which they were purchased.

Scheduling Options

Open Group: Choose from the prescheduled lesson days, times, and prices listed in orange under each course description found below.

One on One/ Private Group: Choose from the prescheduled lesson days and times listed under each course description and/or pick any other days and times during normal hours of operation. Ask for pricing and about group discounts.

Still not sure you want to commit to a 12 or 24-hour course? We recommend scheduling an instructional cruise or charter. You can find more information on our cruises/charters here.

Cancellation Policy

Special Conditions Apply: A 50% deposit is required to reserve a lesson/charter, with the balance due 14 days prior to the start of the lesson/charter. A lesson/charter may be cancelled with no penalty provided a minimum of 30 days’ notice is provided. Cancellation within 30 days will result in the loss of the deposit, and within 14 days, all funds will be forfeit. If cancellation is made 30 days prior to the scheduled lesson/charter, deposits are transferable, and credit will be given towards a rescheduled lesson/charter. In the rare instance that a lesson/charter must be rescheduled due to weather or other concerns, a refund or credit may be offered.

Weather Guaranteed Protection Plan: If it is raining or there are Small Craft warnings at the time of your charter, you may always reschedule with no issues.

ASA Certification Courses

The following are the general descriptions, durations, pricing, and prerequisites for the ASA Standards taught at South Bay Sailing. Candidates must have attained the stated prerequisites before they may take any of the following courses:


Basic Keelboat Sailing (ASA 101) - $495
Course Duration: 24 Hours (8 Lessons)
Boat: J/80
Prerequisites: None
General Description: Able to sail a boat of about 20 feet in length in light to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision. A preparatory Standard with no auxiliary power or navigation skills required.

Open Group lessons are held every Saturday and Sunday from 11:00am to 2:00pm (year-round), and Wednesdays and Fridays between March and November from 5:30pm to 8:30pm


Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 103) - $395
Course Duration: 18 Hours (6 Lessons)
Boat: J/80
Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat Sailing Certification
General Description: Able to cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary powered sailboat of about 20 to 30 feet in length, in moderate winds and sea conditions.

Bareboat Chartering (ASA 104) - Call for Pricing
(Intermediate Coastal Cruising)
Course Duration: 24 Hours (8 Lessons)
Boat: Farr 40
Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat Sailing and Basic Coastal Cruising Certification
General Description: An advanced cruising Standard for individuals with cruising experience. The individual can act as skipper or crew of a 30 - 50 foot boat sailing by day in coastal waters. The Standard includes knowledge of boat systems and Maintenance procedures.

Coastal Navigation (ASA 105) - Call for Pricing
Prerequisites: None
General Description: Able to demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters. There is no Sailing Skills part to this Standard and practical application of this sailing knowledge is found in the Advanced Coastal Cruising Standard.

The ASA "Challenge" - Call for Pricing
Prerequisites: Completion of at least one ASA course offered at SBS
General Description: Sailors who consider themselves qualified to ASA Standards may "Challenge" the ASA Standards. In other words, if you feel qualified, you may ask for a certification test for any ASA Standard offered by South Bay Sailing. To challenge the Standards one must progress successfully through the ASA system of Standards.

SBS Courses

The following are the general descriptions, durations, pricing, and prerequisites for the custom sailing courses offered by South Bay Sailing. These courses are not ASA Standards, but many of them aid in the mastery of an ASA Standard. Candidates must have attained the stated prerequisites before they may take any of the following courses:


Introduction to Sailing (SBS 100) - $75
Course Duration: 1.5 Hours (Single Lesson)
Boat: J/80
Prerequisites: None
General Description: This group course is an introduction to terminology, rigging and steering basics.

Course Duration: 12 Hours (4 Lessons)

General Description: This course covers the first half of ASA 101.

Intermediate Keelboat Sailing (SBS 102) - $295
Course Duration: 12 Hours (4 Lessons)

General Description: This course covers the second half of ASA 101.
